Experiencing Switzerland from a different perspective can be a unique experience. The Bernina Express offers just that. Nominated a UNESCO World Heritage Site Railway Route in 2008, this famous red train takes you comfortably seated, through some of the most breath-taking scenery you will ever see.

In 1910 four years after the work began, the train connecting St. Moritz and Tirano, Switzerland and Italy, finally crossed the famous line, even in those days it was a great success, with about 92,000 tourists boarding this famous train to cross the Alps with its unique views.

A hundred years later little has changed. All year round, thousands of tourists continue to enjoy this train ride admiring the wonderful mountains that surround them.

The route is considered the highest transalpine railway in Europe and covers 145 km over more than 190 vertiginous bridges and viaducts, reaching a maximum altitude of 2253 meters. The mountain range is one of the most spectacular in the world and the different landscapes that you encounter are innumerable.

The most notable landscapes and architectural points of interest along the track are:

  • Brusio: famous helicoidal viaduct with a constant 70%, gradient leads to the station of Brusio.
  • Miralago: following the banks of the Poschiavo lake, there is a spectacular panoramic view of both the lake and the valley.
  • Poschiavo: Immediately after the station of Poschiavo, the train climbs along a very scenic wooded ridge. This section of the route is characterized by numerous tight hairpin bends and an average climbing gradient of 70%.
  • Alp Grüm: from this station you can admire the panoramic view of the entire Poschiavo Valley and the glaciers.
  • Morteratsch: this station is located at the bottom of the Morterasch valley and from here you can admire the Pizzo Bernina peak (4049 mt.).

Guests of THE VIEW Lugano can enjoy an excursion on the Bernina Express. The hotel can make all the arrangements, including a private transfer (circa 2 and a half hours away) to and from Tirano, the departure point for this famous train. There are different options to choose from: a direct train to St. Moritz or one that allows you to get off at different stops to discover the villages along the route.

Back at THE VIEW Lugano, enjoy more wonderful views from the splendid Junior Suite, from the fine dining restaurant or from the relaxing SPA.
